AA ups capacity on Philadelphia route

An Airbus A330-200 with Premium Economy class will take over in 2019

The American Airlines route from Václav Havel Airport Prague to Philadelphia International Airport has proved to be very popular, and the carrier will be introducing a new plane in 2019, an Airbus A330-200 with more seating capacity and Premium Economy class as a result.

“The first year of the Prague link was extremely successful,” Richard Muise, director of European and Canadian operations for American Airlines, said in a press release.

“In 2019, we will offer 500 new seats per week and will present Premium Economy, which confirms our confidence in this market. Philadelphia has proven to be a great entry point to the United States and allows a wide range of downstream connections across North America,” he added.

American Airlines, currently the world's largest airline, started a seasonal connection between Prague and Philadelphia in May 2018. In the summer season, a Boeing 767-300 aircraft provided regular flights.

Václav Řehoř, chairman of the board of directors at Prague Airport, said that during this summer traffic to the US more than doubled compared to the previous year.

“These excellent results confirm that there is potential for further increase in American Airlines' capacity to operate year-round. The connection to the United States and, of course, also from the US to the Czech Republic is of great interest. This is also the result of a joint promotion of the destination within the Touchpoint project, where we cooperate with CzechTourism, Prague City Tourism and the Central Bohemian Tourism Authority,” he added.

Starting in the 2019 summer season, the new Airbus A330-200 will fly on a regular flight to Philadelphia. It features 20 Flagship Business Class seats, 21 Premium Economy seats and 206 seats in the main cabin.

In the Premium Economy class, there are larger adjustable leather seats with a foot support spaced almost 97 cm apart and equipped with individual entertainment systems and larger touchscreens. In addition, passengers have sound-absorbing headphones, hygienic items, a better meal and beverage, and will be able to check two pieces of luggage at no additional cost.

Business travelers using the Flagship Business Class can look forward to full-lying seats fitted with pillows and blankets created by sleep technology company Casper. Other bonuses are a menu inspired by renowned chefs and preferred check-in. As with Premium Economy, customers can use sound-absorbing headphones, hygiene items and more checked baggage.

In the main cabin there are 54 Main Cabin Extra seats, which have a foot space of almost 13 cm.

Every passenger has an international Wi-Fi connection and hundreds of hours of individual free entertainment via personal displays, and the ability to charge devices from a conventional socket or USB port.

Flights in the 2019 schedule will leave Prague at 11:20 am and arrive in Philadelphia at 2:40 pm. Flights will leave Philadelphia at 6:45 pm and arrive in Prague the next day at 9:15 am.

From its Philadelphia base, American Airlines has a network of connecting flights to more than 120 destinations, including Los Angeles, Miami, San Francisco, Chicago, Las Vegas, Orlando, Cancun and the Bahamas.

American Airlines was started in 1930 as American Airways with the union of more than 80 small airlines. It adopted the American Airlines name in 1934. In 2001 it purchased rival Trans World Airlines.

US Airways purchased American Airlines in 2013 but kept the American Airlines name. The combination of the two airlines resulted in the creation of the largest airline in the world.
