British Airways named Quietest Airline

The contest at Václav Havel Airport Prague is aimed at noise reduction

British Airways (BA) was named the Quietest Airline in this year's competition, which was organized by Prague Airport in cooperation with the Prague 6 district.

The Crystal Trophy was handed over to the winner by Prague Airport Board Chairman Václav Řehoř and Prague 6 Mayor Ondřej Kolář (TOP 09) during a meeting of airport representatives with mayors of nearby municipalities and city districts.

The competition aims to motivate airlines to deploy modern and quieter aircraft. It looks at noise levels at arrival and take-off, as well as the observation of designated flight routes and efficient use of seating to increase the occupancy of the aircraft.

Prague Airport, the company that operates Václav Havel Airport Prague, has long been active in the field of environmental protection and, on the basis of regular discussions with representatives of nearby localities, is trying to find a solution to ensure happy co-existence.

The Quietest Airline Competition is one of the most effective tools for this common goal.
The competition is held annually when air traffic at Václav Havel Airport is the most intense, from the start of May to the end of October. A sophisticated noise monitoring system is used to evaluate the competition.

The ANOMS9 monitoring system, which continuously measures air traffic noise and records trajectories of all flights, includes 13 stationary and two mobile measuring stations placed at selected locations in the airport’s vicinity to ensure sufficient information values of the measurements.

“Harmonious coexistence with the surrounding area is important to us, and due to the increasing air traffic, we need to use all the possibilities to motivate our partners to take a responsible approach to the residents near the airport. For Prague Airport, it is also important to add that despite the increasing number of checked-in passengers in recent years we have not seen the same rapid increase in air traffic. This is evidenced by the increasing number of larger aircraft deployed on flights to Prague and more efficient use of seat capacity, which we actively motivate carriers to use,” Řehoř said.

Some 10 carriers that fly most often to Václav Havel Airport took part in the 13th year of the competition for the Quietest Carrier title. These were Aeroflot, Austrian Airlines, British Airways, Czech Airlines, EasyJet, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, LOT Polish Airlines, Lufthansa, Ryanair and Travel Service / Smart Wings.

UK-based carrier British Airways won for the first time. EasyJet was in second place, and LOT Polish Airlines came in third.

“We have long been striving to reduce traffic noise across our network. … We are also increasingly deploying new aircraft from our fleet on both short and long lines, which will lead to further improvement. For example, we have recently added 35 new Airbus A320 and A321neo aircraft that are not only quieter but also more fuel efficient,” Andy Kershaw, British Airways' environment manager, said upon receiving what he called a “significant award.”

Prague 6 Mayor Kolář looked forward to further steps. “We welcome the fact that we have been able to reduce the noise burden both for the inhabitants of our urban area and for the surrounding municipalities in the long run, despite the increasing number of aircraft and passengers. No less important is the surface load from cars and passenger buses, and I believe that the question of ecological capacities of the city and the airport will be resolved as soon as possible,” he said.

Last year the winner of Quietest Airline award last year was easyJet, which also won in 2006 and 2011. Other carriers to win multiple times are KLM Royal Dutch Airlines in 2008, 2014 and 2015; and Aeroflot in 2010 and 2013.
