Prague to host urban mobility hub

The EU backed project is aimed at developing and implementing new ideas

The European Institute for Innovation and Technology (EIT) has selected Prague as the center for the mobility project of the consortium MOBILus. The Prague innovation hub will cover Eastern Europe and Israel.

“I am glad that Prague’s offer succeeded in strong European competition. For Prague, this means both a great negotiating success, but above all, the opportunity to become the leader of innovation in the field of urban mobility,”Prague Mayor Zdeněk Hřib (Pirates) said.

The MOBILus consortium brings together 48 partners including 13 cities, 17 large industrial companies and 18 universities and development centers. It will be used to implement innovative projects in urban mobility funded by the largest European program for innovation, science and research, Horizon2020.

The consortium is primarily aimed at becoming a European leader of innovation in urban mobility projects, according to a press release. It will apply innovative solutions in cities using cooperation between firms, research organizations and universities; educate other professionals in the field; refine and improve individual ideas and incentives so they can be quickly put into practice; accelerate the launch of other urban mobility projects and services; and create ways to extend and implement successful projects in other locations.
The project is set for seven years, with a total financial volume of 1.6 billion euros, with the EIT directly paying 25 percent. The first results should be visible in 2020.

The MOBILus hub is the first Knowledge and Innovation Community(KIC) project in the Czech Republic.

In addition to the City of Prague, the Czech members of the consortium are the Transport Faculty of the Czech Technical University (ČVUT), Škoda Auto and the Institute of Information Theory and Automation of the Czech Academy of Sciences.

The previous and current administrations in Prague’s City Hall have made urban transportation one of the top priorities, and have been seeking ways to reduce pollution from passenger cars in particular in the city center.
