Prague’s Semmering track has been renovated

The historical track with landmark bridges will carry more commuter trains

The autumn renovation of track 122 from Smíchov to Hostivice, part of the so-called the Prague Semmering, has enabled an increase in traffic. Starting om Feb. 2, there will be a new train during the morning peak and improved connections.

The track is called Simmerling after a mountain track near Vienna that also uses stone viaducts. The Prague track opened in 1872 for both freight and passengers as part of the Buštěhrad Railroad. Two of the track’s stone viaducts are now protected cultural heritage.

The original viaducts were completely repaired, including the decorative elements. New steel rails were also installed and signals along the track have been improved.

Construction work was carried out by Metrostav and cost Kč 63.7 million, according to previous information from Prague Integrated Transit (PID).

The work also included new platforms at the Stodůlky and Žvahov stations and new information systems. A new Prague-Jinonice train stop was built next to the Jinonice metro station top make transfers easier.

In total the track runs 27 kilometers, much of it through scenic nature with views down into valleys. By the 1990s there were plans to cancel the route, but the floods of 2002 showed that it could still be an essential link.

The new morning train will reach the center of the city. The train already goes from Noutonice via Středokluky and Hostivice to Zličín. The repaired track will allow the route to go from Zličín to Cibulka, Jinonice and Žvahov to Smíchov and to the main railway station, Praha hlavní nádraží. It will in the morning between 7 am and 9 am from Hostivice via Zličín to the city center of every 30 minutes.

Residents of several villages such as Hostouň, Dobrovíz, Středokluky, Tuchoměřice and Noutonice will now be able to commute to Prague via train.

There will also be better connections to and from Kladno, with the schedule set so people can change at Hostivice to fast trains.
