Work on Metro D about to start

Agreements have been reached with landowners at several of the stops

The first steps for building the Metro D line connecting the city center with the city’s southern neighborhoods is about to start. City Hall expects to start work on the long-planned fourth metro line in two months. The first phase of the line will extend from Pankrác to Nové Dvory.

Prague Mayor Zdeněk Hřib (Pirates) said that starting the geological survey for the metro line is a coalition goal for the first half of this year. The tunnels created for the survey will also serve as a basis for construction, he added.

The project a big step forward March 18 when the city reached an agreement with landowners that would be affected by the metro stop at Nádraží Krč. The agreement calls for the property owners to drop their legal attempts to block the construction of the metro line.

“It is a great success, I have worked on the agreement since joining City Hall. This will open the way to the construction of the first stage of the new Metro D line from Pankrác to the planned Nové Dvory station. Behind the agreement are intense successful negotiations by the city and the Prague Public Transit Company and a constructive approach by the land owners,” Deputy Mayor Adam Scheinherr (Praha Sobě), responsible for transport, said on the City Hall website.

The withdrawal of a second legal case by Arkády Pankrác last week was also confirmed by Scheinherr.

After dealing with the remaining claims of several owners, nothing will be in the way of the geological survey, and it is expected to start in about two months, Scheinherr added.

Another agreement has been concluded by City Hall concerning the planned Nemocnice Krč stop. The agreement will enable landowners to build their own projects at the underground part of the metro and at the entrance and exit of the station.

In the vicinity of Nádraží Krč stop, between the highway segment Jižní spojka, V Podzámčí Street and the railway line, residential houses and administrative buildings should grow. In the western part of the area, the owners want to build hotels.

“The central part should be a park with water features, so passengers can get out of the subway into a pleasant environment. We also expect the P + R car parking lot to be built for drivers,” Scheinherr said.

Prague Mayor Zdeněk Hřib was pleased with the progress. “As promised in the coalition program, the launch of Metro D construction is a crucial step for us to address the long-term transport problems that our capital is suffering. I am extremely pleased that thanks to the quality of the work of the deputy mayor for transport, Adam Scheinherr, we are actually getting a little closer to starting the construction of Metro D,” Hřib said.

According to City Hall, the first section of Metro D between Pankrác to Nové Dvory, should be put into operation by the end of 2027.

The Metro D line has faced numerous delays. Construction was originally supposed to start in 2010. There was a petition in 2016 to change the approved designs for the stations between Pankrác to Písnice because the designs are already outdated, and do not reflect current trends in mass transit.

Even at the time they were made, they used ideas from the 1990s and not the 2000s, according to the petitioners. The stations were designed in 2009 by eight architects working for the construction firm Metroprojekt.

The city administration at the time largely rejected the petition as any significant changes would require the permit process to start over again, which could add years of further delays. Only cosmetic changes are possible.

Design changes can still be made to the planned Náměstí Míru and Náměstí Bratří Synků stations, as they do not yet have their final permits.
