Parking zones expanding again

Most of the new zones will be in Prague 4 and Prague 6

Prague is expecting a large expansion of the paid parking zones by the end of the year.

Most of the new paid parking places will be established in Prague 4.

The extension of the paid zones was recommended at the last meeting of the City Council’s Parking Committee. Prague Deputy Mayor Adam Scheinherr (Praha Sobě) said that individual city districts want the expansion.

The proposal call for an additional 14,875 paid parking spots. Most of them will be blue zones, intended only for residents. The majority, some 7,536, are in Prague 4. The zones there will be established in Podolí, Pankrác and Braník.

Prague 6 will see an increase of 4,826 places. These will mainly be in Evropská Street, including the Dědina housing project. Residents there have often complained that people used the local spots for airport parking to save money.

New paid parking zones will also be in Hanspaulka and in the area between Evropská and Břevnov.

In Prague 5 there will be 2,513 paid parking places in the areas of Jinonická, Šmukýřka, Farkány, Musílkova and Černý Vrch.

This will be a significant increase in the number of paid parking spots. So far, Prague has 115,000 spots in parking zones. The expansion is expected by the end of the year, though an exact time frame has not been determined.

The next step is for comments to be made on the proposal defining the new zones, then the proposal and comments will go to the City Council. The final date for adding the new zones will be determined by agreement with the individual city districts.

The Parking Commission also recommended not to extend the paid zones to Prague 9.

Zones in Prague began to operate in 1996 in parts of Prague 1 and were subsequently extended to the whole of Prague 1, 2, 7, and most of Prague 3. The zones were extended to Prague 5, 6 and 8 in 2016, and expanded in 2017 and again in 2018. Zones are also run by the Town Hall in Prague 13, 16 and 22.
