Tram line likely for Motol

The city is looking at a new track to link the Bílá Hora and Řepy areas

The Prague City Council approved commissioning a new study for a tram line from Vypich to Motol. It would run along Kukulová Street and connect with tram lines in Bílá Hora and Řepy. It would also serve Motol Hospital (Fakultní nemocnice v Motole). But the line, if built, likely won’t go into service for almost a decade.

The track should cover 2.2 kilometers. Costs were previously estimated in 2017 at Kč 720 million, but this may change due to possible changes in the construction plan.

The new line is part of the tram development strategy for Prague until 2030.

The track could be built between 2026 and ’28. If the project is sped up, the timeframe could be between 2024 and ’26. This faster approach counts on the study finding new technical solutions and on an approval of an amendment to the land-use plan by 2021.

The City Council said the previous study is obsolete and uses outdated documents. It also does not meet the current requirements for incorporating tram lines into the road and into public space.

The Prague Public Transit Company (DPP) will also prepare a study for a tram line from Pražského povstání to Pankrác and Budějovická, which could be built between 2025 and ’27. Preliminary estimates put the construction costs at Kč 700 million crowns. Prague is also planning a new route to Slivenec and Libuše.

The city also recently announced that proposed trams heading from the city to nearby Central Bohemian suburbs of Jesenice and Průhonice are now not counted on, though a line from Kobylisy to Zdiby will still happen. Project preparation for that line should start this year. The 5.5 kilometer stretch should cost Kč 2 billion, including two Park and Ride lots for a total of 1,260 cars.

The city is also looking into zoning changes to allow an extension of tracks from Spořilov to Jižní Město.

There are also plans to return trams to Wenceslas Square, and the start section of the tracks were built as part of the renovations of the area around the National Museum.
