Prague exploring water trams

Three boat routes would be in addition to the existing cross-river ferries

Prague City Hall is exploring the idea of water trams to transport people up and down the Vltava. In the future, the water trams could be added to the ferries on the Vltava River. Unlike the currently operated ferries across the banks of the Vltava, city water tram lines will move up and down the river. The City Council approved a calling for a study to show how the project could be implemented.

The boats would become part of the city’s public transit system.

“We want to offer new possibilities in the city, and water trams can be one of the innovations. Prague residents would be able to expect a pleasant choice about whether to go to work or go to the cinema by tram or to ride directly on the Vltava river,” Prague Deputy Mayor Adam Scheinherr (Praha Sobě), responsible for transit, said on the City Hall website.

The capital city is now updating a nine-year-old study to evaluate the realities for using boats for public transit. “For example, the study should show the status of each dock, where it would be best for each line to go, how many lines would be deployed, and how long it would take. It should definitely not be about having a new attraction for tourists, but lines that ordinary Prague citizens will ride,” Scheinherr said.

Plans currently include three lines in total. The southern line could connect the Dvorce area with Janáčkovo nábřeží across Smichov and Výtoňská náplavka, the central line would join Smetanovo nábřeží with three islands, and the northern line would revive the section of the Vltava between Karlín, Holešovice and Podbaba.

To prepare the study itself, which will serve as a basis for further decision-making of the city, a selection procedure is being prepared by the Regional Organizer of Prague Integrated Transport (ROPID).

Prague currently has six ferry lines, two of which operate all year round.
