One Weekend in Berlin – Part One
Travelling outside of Prague
We all know that Prague is a beautiful city, full of things to do and places to see- but what if you, god forbid, get bored of it? Good job there are plenty of other cities and other countries surrounding the Czech Republic to go and visit.
Berlin is one such city, obviously the capital of neighbouring Germany, and relatively easy to reach by train or coach. I visited Berlin recently, travelling by coach for a fun-filled weekend of culture, sights and maybe a little bit of partying.
There are many different coach companies which travel to Berlin from Prague, but being the penniless intern that I am, we chose to travel with Student Agency, which offered a return journey for around 1486 CZK - quite a bargain considering the extras included in the travel, but more about those later.
For accommodation we chose to stay in a hostel, an obvious choice for us young folks. We chose the Generator hostel, situated on Landsberger Allee in Prenzlauer Berg. Again, this was a cheaper choice, costing merely 728 CZK for two nights- although we were sharing a room, we only had to share on the Saturday night, and we had our own bathroom.
Travelling there, we set off from Florenc at 7:30am, and arrived in Berlin at about 12pm- half an hour earlier than scheduled. There was a stop in Dresden, but other than that the journey was non-stop to Berlin, with no time to get up and stretch your legs. The coach itself was fitted with touch screen TVs on the back of every seat, allowing passengers to watch films and tv shows, listen to music and play games, with the option of both English with Czech subtitles, and in Czech. There were also free hot drinks, including some very nice hot chocolate which I sampled myself.
Upon arriving in Berlin, we somehow successfully navigated the transport system- which is almost similar to Prague’s, only slightly more complicated- and arrived at the hostel within half an hour. The check-in itself was easy, and we were handed our keycards and a token for a free drink in the bar attached to the building.
After unpacking and locking away our luggage, we were more than ready to start exploring Berlin. But that’s a whole other article.
