Liberation Festival - Pilsen 01-06 May 2015

The Spectacular Liberation Festival Will Allow You to Travel 70 Years Back in Time

Similarly to the D Day and the Operation Overlord of the allies in Normandy on 6th June 1944 which symbolizes the beginning of the end of the Second World War, the Liberation Festival in Pilsen remembers the Victory Day – the end of the Second World War. On 6th May 1945, the U.S. Army liberated Pilsen as one of the last spots in Europe. This year´s celebration commemorating the 70th anniversary of the end of one of the biggest conflict in the modern history will be really spectacular.Since 1st until 6th May, the city will be invaded by Second World War military camps and historic as well as modern army vehicles. The Memorial of the George S. Patton, the architect of the victory, will be unveiled.

There is a rich cultural programme being prepared. Its most attractive part will be a great concert of the American southern hard-rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd famous mainly for its song Sweet Home Alabama (Held on 1st May. You can buy tickets online).

After the years, some of the American and Belgian veterans of the Second World War are coming to meet local people and remember together the amazing atmosphere of the May days of 1945. People can meet them personally during a public debate. The reconstructions of some of the main events such as the arrival of the U.S. army on the central Republic Square or bombing of one of the Pilsen´s railway stations are being prepared. Besides a number of commemorating acts, the main attraction of the Liberation Festival will be the convoy of the historical vehicles, so-called Convoy of Liberty which will pass though Pilsen on Sunday 3rd May after 11 a.m. The front of the convoy will be formed by armoured historical vehicles and Sherman tanks. In the first part of the convoy, there will be soldiers dressed in the same uniforms as Americans in May 1945. The modern hi-tech technique of the Czech Army and U.S. troops located in Germany will close the convoy.

The main aim of this year´s celebration is not only to commemorate one of the most important events of the history of the city which used to be lied about during the communist times but to show the visitors “how it really was”. Besides the historical military vehicles you can look forward to a lot of events reminding the period, such as the construction of an American camp, a swing evening in the style of American dancefloors or a repeated football match between FC Viktoria Pilsen and soldiers which attracted more than 10 thousand visitors in 1945. If you decide to come to Pilsen at the time, the unique atmosphere will allow you to travel exactly 70 years back in time.
