More buses and trams for the holidays

More frequent service will be available to help shoppers

There will be increased service of the metro, trams and buses to the city center and shopping malls during the time leading up to the Christmas holidays. The increased service will run from Nov. 26 to Dec. 23. During Friday afternoon peak periods and on weekends the metro will run on the Monday to Thursday schedule, so waiting time will be reduced to six minutes from 7.5 minutes.

Advent is traditionally the busiest time for public transportation. Demand rises especially in the direction of Václav Havel Airport Prague, as people fly home for the holidays.

Tram transport on the 5, 11 and 15 lines will have two-car trams or articulated trams. Bus lines 118, 133 and 207 will run articulated buses, and line 119, which goes to the airport, will have six minute intervals to coincide with metro service. Bus lines 136 and 213 will also have more frequent service.

Service returns to normal holiday schedules on Dec. 24 and for the following two days. Christmas in the Czech Republic is celebrated Dec. 24, unlike in many other countries where it is a day later. Dec. 25 and 26 are also national holidays. A new law that took effect this year requires many large stores to be closed on some national holidays, so people need to get shopping done in advance. Stores will have to close by noon on Dec. 24 and remain closed Dec. 25 and 26. Pharmacies, gas stations and stores under 200 square meters are exempt, as are ones in hospitals and train stations.

In addition to Christmas, a big holiday for children in the Czech Republic is St Nicholas Day (sv. Mikuláš) on Dec. 5. The Prague Transport Company (DPP) will have a celebration for children on Saturday, Dec. 3, from 1 to 6 pm at the Střešovice depot. The event will include activities, puppet theater and small gifts.
