Half-marathon will reduce traffic and trams

People are urged to take the metro on Saturday if they go downtown

The Sportisimo Prague Half Marathon on Saturday, April 1, will restrict car traffic in the city center, and some tram and bus routes will be changed. Police will also deploy dozens of officers to ensure the security of the race, Prague Police spokesman Tomáš Hulan said.

The race starts at 10 am in front of the Rudolfinum at náměstí Jana Palacha and is expected to last three hours. The fastest runners are expected to finish in an hour and a half.

Detours for traffic will be marked, and police will be giving drivers instructions on alternative routes during the marathon. Hulan asked drivers to respect the instructions of the police officers. Detours can be expected in Prague 1, 2, 5, 7 and 8.

People are asked to use the metro whenever possible to reduce congestion downtown. Parking is also restricted in Prague 1, and cars could be towed.

Some changes will already occur during the night, and night tram 53 is among the routes affected. Tram routes 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 9, 10, 12, 14, 16, 17, 18, 22, 23 and 25 will be affected at different times during the race. Buses 176, 194 and 207 will also be affected. Departure times listed on schedules as well as low-floor accessibility is not guaranteed.

The route is mostly along the waterfront and will cross the Vltava river by bridges three times. The full route is as follows: ulice 17. listopadu, náměstí Jana Palacha, Křižovnická, Křižovnické náměstí, Smetanovo nábřeží, Masarykovo nábřeží, Palackého náměstí, Rašínovo nábřeží, Plavecká, Vyšehradská, Svobodova, Rašínovo nábřeží, Palackého most, Lidická, Svornosti, Strakonická, in front of Nádražní, Strakonická, Hořejší nábřeží, Nábřežní, Janáčkovo nábřeží, most Legií, Smetanovo nábřeží, Křižovnické nám., Křižovnická, Mánesův most, Klárov, nábřeží Edvarda Beneše, nábřeží Kapitána Jaroše, Bubenské nábřeží, Komunardů, Jateční v protisměru, Jankovcova, Libeňský most, Štorchova, Voctářova, Rohanské nábřeží, Těšnovský tunel, nábřeží Ludvíka Svobody, Dvořákovo nábřeží, Čechův most, nábřeží Edvarda Beneše, U plovárny, Kosárkovo nábřeží, Mánesův most, náměstí Jana Palacha, 17. listopadu.

The area around náměstí Jana Palacha will be closed the longest, at preparations have to be made before the race and then taken down after. Other areas will only be closed during the times that runners are going past the area.

The 19th Sportisimo Prague Half Marathon has a capacity for 11,500 runners. It is an IAAF Road Race Gold Label event and attracts international runners. The result of the 2012 race, with Atsedu Tsegay, of Ethiopia winning at 58:47 is the fifth fastest half marathon in the history. This year's route is 21.0975 km.
