Prague 6 launches food collection

The district will be collecting food for the less fortunate until Nov. 30

The Prague 6 district, together with the Prague Food Bank Czech Federation of Food Banks, launched another event called “Six is Not Wasting Food” (Šestka jídlem neplýtvá). Until Nov. 30, food can be brought to the Prague 6 office building and three information offices.

“We have already worked with the Prague Food Bank in the past, and I do not see why we shouldn't support this beneficial event again.

A food collection is also a form of reflection on whether food and other goods can be handled more economically. Every year, it shows how many dozens or even hundreds of tons of still usable food still ends up in the dump every day, and maybe more people will think about food waste. And of course, we are helping in a good cause,” Prague 6 Mayor Ondřej Kolář (TOP 09) said on the district website.

The drive looks for donations of non-perishable food items such as all kinds of canned food (pates, fish, meats and vegetables, ready meals, etc.), soups of all kinds (ramen, packaged mixes, mug servings, etc.), sugar, flour, semolina, pasta, ketchup, mustard, jams, marmalade, honey, fruit compotes, teas, syrups, sponge cakes, biscuits, cereals, baby food, candy for children (chocolates, sweets).

It is also possible to bring drugstore items such as washing powders, shower soaps, dishwashing detergents, cleaning products, shampoos, oral hygiene products, toilet paper and paper handkerchiefs.

“Selected products will be turned over to a food bank and then to facilities for children without parents, for people in crisis, for disabled or homeless people and other groups of people at risk of social exclusion,” Milena Hanušová (TOP 09), councilor for Social Policy and Health, said. All places where food can be brought will be marked with the Prague 6 and Prague Food Bank logos.

Experts estimate up to one-third of the food harvested is eventually wasted, and this is a contributor to global warming and a waste of resources.

Food can be brought until from Monday to Thursday from 8 am to 4 pm until Nov. 30 to:
