French Market returns to Kampa

The space under Prague's Charles Bridge will become a French quarter

A traditional French Market will take place on Kampa from July 11 to 15, daily from 11 am to 9 pm. The square just below Charles Bridge will be transformed into a typical French quarter with French cuisine, fine wine, music and a host of new features.

The first French Market (Francouzský trh) took place in 2008, so this is the 10th anniversary.

“The French Market at Kampa continues to mature like good wine, and its reputation has grown beyond the borders of the Czech Republic, just like French gastronomy. Since January, we have been receiving requests for information from Germany, Austria, Italy, England, and Russia. Some Prague tour operators have even included us in their program.” organizer Thomas Bouton said.

“People join us from all over the world because the French Market at Kampa creates happy moments where time slows down for a bit, and where we have enough time to chat, to party and to have fun because we take the time to savor and enjoy a glass of wine, a plate of cheese, charcuterie, and oysters,” Thomas Bouton said.

This year, thanks to slightly smaller stands, there will be more exhibitors and more specialties of French cuisine. New vendors will have organic wines from Cévennes, black pig terrines from the Limousin region, as well as virgin almond and pumpkin seed oils from Huilerie Beaujolaise. There will also be a chance to taste some Parisian drinks such as a Monaco and a Picon beer.

Other vendors will offer seafood, escargot, sausages, fresh farm produce, cheese, baked goods, and regional specialties from across Provence to the Basque region.

The French markets are not just about food. Musical accompaniment from French artists will enhance the atmosphere every day. The French singer Jack Simard, who has released five albums, will perform twice at the market, on July 12 and 13. Live music will take place three times a day, at 11:30 am, 2 pm and 5:30 pm.
