Prague in Depth: Shopping - Sweetshops

Get to know the Czech retail environment

The cukrárna (sweet shop/cake shop) is a great place to eat something sweet, drink a coffee, and especially to pick up a little something special before going to someone's home for a visit.

This is a very traditional kind of shop, and many of them have a classic look and feel.

If you're unfamiliar with Czech sweets, the following list should help you identify some of the more common varieties available on the other side of the glass:

Kokoská
A coconut cookie sandwich with cream and jam. (A personal favorite.)

Indian
Tart cream stacked high on a cookie and covered with a chocolate coating.

Turecký med
"Turkish Honey"

Laskonka
Coconut meringue.

Větrník
Eclair-like pastry cream sandwich covered with a caramel frosting.

Marokanska
Brittle mix of nuts, fruit and cereals, caramelized into a disk and covered in chocolate.

Čara
Long cookie topped with cream and covered with chocolate.

Žloutkovy řez
Egg yolk cream mashed into a striped thing.
