D+D REAL Czech Masters nears end

Lee Slattery leads English dominance of the top 10 at the D+D REAL Czech Masters

Lee Slattery’s absolute dominant performance during round two, where he shot a round of -7 65 in horrific weather conditions, has put himself in the prime position going into the final day. Slattery, whose wife at home is eight days overdue to have their second child, puts his lead down to his straight hitting and putting. “It’s one of those days when all the putts are going in,” Slattery informed Prague.TV during his second round dominance. Slattery also took advantage on Saturday as he could finish is second round while many of the chasing players were forced to finish their rounds early due a waterlogged course on Friday and play up to 38 holes on Saturday.

Chris Hanson was one of those players who has been playing solid all week but appeared to suffer from heavy feet after playing 35 holes on Saturday playing two double bogeys across the third round including a very tired looking double at 18. Jonathan Thomson (21) a European Tour debutant has played exceptionally consistent golf across all three rounds carting just five bogies and a double bogie so far putting the young Yorkshireman in a good position going into today’s final round.

There are some big threats to the English domination of the fourth D+D REAL Czech Masters, Haydn Porteous from South Africa is two strokes off the lead in second position with an ever-improving performance (70, 69, 67) and Pontus Widegren from Sweden remains third playing well across day one and three. Two more Englishman, James Morrison and Callum Shinkwin (Round One leader) along with American Julian Suri, Austrian Martin Wiegele and Dane Jeff Winther remain outside contenders six strokes off Slattery’s lead.

Lee Westwood, who expected to be further up the leader board, struggled during Saturday to find his putter missing several birdie putts within a couple of feet of the hole to remain at -3. Former D+D REAL Czech Masters champions and fellow Ryder Cup team mate Jamie Donaldson has not found his form either remaining at -2. Possibly the player struggling the most versus their potential is former champion here Thomas Pieters from Belgium despite being one of the hottest young players in golf has also remained at -2.

The D+D REAL Czech Masters has proved a popular event with players and home fans alike. “The quality of players coming to has improved dramatically over the past few years,” confirms Ivo Isper, president of the Czech professional caddy’s association. “We provide lfewer caddies each year as the quality of the players coming to Prague has improved.” There is a genuine family atmosphere around the tournament, with many of the players bringing their partners and children along to the tournament. Lee Westwood’s partner, Helen Storey, and her daughter have been cheering Lee on during the tournament, and Martin Wiegele spent his post-match packing his baby pram into the back of the family car.

Sunday’s golf looks to show promise, we’re expecting to see the sun again and if Lee Slattery’s form keeps up we’ll see the first English champion at the Albatross Golf Course. The off-course program is full of activities for kids and adults alike with free parking and free transport get you to the course and free entrance for children under 15, those with a Škoda (you have to show the key), CGF membership, a Raiffeisen bank card or a Tipsport bet on the tournament. Otherwise, entrance for Sunday only is Kč 200. There’s no better opportunity to come see great golf and the winners awarding ceremony around 7 pm.
