Prague approves funds for sports grounds

Dozens of facilities will be fixed, expanded or renovated

Prague City Council approved funds to renovate sports grounds and fix unsafe conditions. Most of the money will be given to city districts.

“We are giving about Kč 160 million to repair almost 70 public sports facilities including several school playgrounds. Thanks to these funds, the sports infrastructure in Prague is improving. Sport is a positive phenomenon, and it definitely deserves support from the city,” Deputy Mayor Petr Dolínek (ČSSD) said on the City Hall website.

The subsidies will help build or renovate dozens of sports grounds. Among other things, the money will go to construction or renovations of the multifunctional sports hall Tatran Střešovice (Kč 5.2 million), a multipurpose playground at Tupolevova Elementary School (Kč 4.5 million), a multifunctional sports facility at ZŠ Na Korábě Elementary School (Kč 8 million), a school sports complex at TG Masaryk School at Ortenově náměstí (Kč 6.5 million), five public sports fields in Prague 13 (Kč 9 million), a playground at Jeremenkova Elementary School (Kč 8 million), two skate parks in Štvanice and Čentická (Kč 1.5 million and Kč 4.5 million), a softball area at Dolákova Elementary School (5.2 million), and a pool in Letňany(3.6 million)

“Last year, Prague was the European Capital of Sport. We did not get this title by accident. At that time I promised that I would do everything in my power to keep pace with sports. I am glad to be able to fulfill this promise,” Dolinek said.

Prague and the city districts have been investing heavily in park renovations, reforesting wooded areas, planting trees on streets, repairs, and replacement of benches and other public furniture, and similar projects. Public WiFi is becoming more available in city squares, and more Smart City projects are being introduced.

Several districts have also been installing boxes on poles so people can give away unwanted books.

Many projects and in multiple phases and will continue into 2018.
