Prague to honor Olympians in Old Town Square

The city will welcome back its teams and may show the final ice hockey match

Prague is preparing for an official reception for the Czech competitors from the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics and a public showing of the ice hockey final if the Czech team competes.

“We are going to officially welcome the athletes in Old Town Square on Monday, Feb. 26. If the Czech team moves to the final, we would like to arrange a large screen in Old Town Square,” City Hall spokesman Vít Hofman said.

Which athletes will appear on the square and other details are not clear yet.

A large screen could be in Old Town Square on Sunday, Feb. 25, for the final ice hockey match. The Czech team has already advanced to the semifinals by beating the US team 3:2 in a penalty shootout. The Czechs will face Olympic Athletes from Russia (OAR) in the semifinals on Feb. 23.

The Czech team last won at ice hockey in the Olympics 1998 in Nagano, Japan, and came in third in 2006 in Turin.

The Czech Republic is currently in 13th place in overall medals, with one gold, two silver and three bronze, though the games are not yet over.

Ester Ledecká became one of the big stories of the games when she unexpectedly won gold in the women’s super-G, as her main sport is snowboarding.

The two silver medals have gone to Michal Krcmar for men’s 10km sprint and to Martina Sáblíková for women’s 5,000 meter.

The three bronze medals went to Veronika Vítková for women’s 7.5 km sprint, Karolína Erbanová for women’s 500 meter and Eva Samková for women’s snowboard cross.

The XXIII Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea, started Feb. 8 and will end Feb. 25.
