Skating and ski rinks open

Two rinks closing but most remain open, pond ice still too thin

Despite the cold weather, the ice on ponds is not thick enough for skating, but there are still plenty of other options for urban skating and even skiing that should be available until the end of winter.

For skating on a lake, pond or reservoir, the ice should be at least 16 centimeters thick. Recent measurements at Kyjský rybník in Prague 9 and Hostivařská přehrada in Prague 10 show ice at a maximum of 10 cm, while Džbán in Prague 6 was even less thick, at 7 cm.

Police monitor the ice in popular skating locations and issue warnings when it is not strong enough.

Even when it is thick on one part of a pond it can be thinner elsewhere, and skating in nature is always at one’s own risk, the police advise.

Maintained skating rinks are a better option, safety wise. Most will be open for as long as the weather allows.

Two outdoor rinks that have been open are already closing at the end of January, the ones at Ovocný trh and Černý Most.

Others should stay in operation as long as the weather permits, hopefully to the end of February or in some cases even in March. Some are closed when it rains, as this interferes with the artificial ice, so it is best to check ahead in case of questionable weather.

Some rinks are free to the public, though skate rental costs money.
There is also a cross-country skiing track called Ski Park Praha at Vypich in Prague 6.
