Kotlářka’s baseball season starts

Two Prague teams will meet for a doubleheader March 30

Baseball season is starting in the Czech Republic. Kotlářka Praha takes on their crosstown rivals, the Tempo Titans on Saturday, March 30 in a double header at Kotlářka Baseball Ballpark in Prague.

Some 10 teams will be competing in the top-level Extraliga to reach the finals. Each team will play 27 games, meeting each opponent three times in the regular season. The top six teams will go on to battle it out for the title, and the winner should be known by the end of August.

Kotlářka hasn’t held the title since 2015, and hopes to turn the situation around. There are some changes in the lineup. The head coach is Scott Mullhearn, who replaced Michal Müller.

New to the team is 23-year-old Australian Nick Hutchings, who has experience in the Pittsburgh Pirates’ farm leagues in the organization and has also spent several years with the Adelaide Bites. Other foreign players on the team include Australian Jackson Brebner and American Joseph Truesdale.

Mullhearn says that he hopes to develop good team chemistry so they function like a family. He also hopes to develop them not only as players, but as people off the field as well.

Last year, the Arrows Ostrava won the season with Draci Brno and Eagles Praha coming in second and third.

The history of Kotlářka began in 1980. Until 2006, it had only youth teams.

After 2006, when the independent civic association Kotlářka Praha was founded, a baseball field was built in Prague 6, near Markéta. It was completed in 2008.

Kotlářka Praha team won the national league in 2009 and advanced to the top league. In 2010 the team reached fifth place.

Since 2011, Kotlářka has been a regular participant in the Extraliga Playoffs, in the 2013 and 2014 seasons she has made it to the finals. In the 2015 season, Kotlářka finally fulfilled its dream and with the title of Czech Extraliga Champion.
