Summer fun: Geocaching

Geocaching 101 and how to do it in Prague

Geocaching is defined as a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. It is a fun activity that can be done anywhere in the world and there is even a large community of geocaching enthusiasts. The idea was born on May 3rd 2000 with an upgrade to GPS technology and has been growing ever since.

What exactly is a geocache?

A geocache is simply a container with a logbook or log-sheet that is hidden by a member of the geocaching community. The containers vary in size and appearance: they can be as little as a 100 ml snack box or it can be as large as a 20 liter barrel. Larger geocaches may contain items that the finder can take and replace with their own.

How do I join?

It is very easy to become a member of the community. First you need to register for free Basic Membership which you can do quickly through Facebook for example. Once you’re signed up you can search for a geocache near you by entering your postal code on the search page. You can choose which one you want to find and get the coordinates by clicking on its name.

Then you just search the coordinates on your phone and you go hunting for the hidden geocache. Once you find it you can sign into the logbook and return it to the same spot where you found it. Members are encouraged to share their geocaching stories and photos online!

Panic! What if I’m a beginner?

When you search for a geocache make sure that your first one is labeled as “traditional” and has a low difficulty rating. Of course you can also choose a larger size that will be easier to spot. Finally you should check online logs to see if people have recently found it – these are marked with a smiley face. Then just go for it and have fun!

What else should I know about geocaching?

There are millions of geocaches all over the world and new ones keep popping up as the popularity of the activity grows. There are various apps (some cost money but there are always free options) where you can register and track your progress. Most countries have their own website for it in the native language, but you can also get plenty of information on

As a member you can hide your own geocache as long as you follow the guidelines. It is also recommended that you find a bunch first so that you learn more about where and how to hide them through experience. There are discussions, events and much for more to explore!
