More Prague lakes may open for swimming

Kyje is one of several districts planning to upgrade local lakes and ponds

The lake in Prague's Kyje neighborhood could be turned into a natural swimming area with purified water. The local administration of Prague 14 has approved a study for land use, which is the first step in the project. Based on the study, further steps could be taken to prepare the area for the project, Prague 14 Mayor Radek Vondra (TOP 09) said.

A similar project has already been implemented in Radotín in Prague 16. The project there cost Kč 64 million excluding tax.

The Kyje bathing area would be at the shore of the lake and would include showers, toilets, changing rooms, a beach, a playground, a place for refreshments, a new parking lot and possibly a pier. The project also counts on new routes to the area and new trees being planted. Further studies will examine whether other attractions such as an outdoor gym should be added.

A project for a natural swimming area is proposed in Stodůlky at the Velká Ohrada housing estate. The Prague 13 authorities are conducting an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). The Modřany district of Prague 4 is also considering a natural swimming area.

The Lhotka neighborhood in Prague 4 could also have a new swimming area starting next year. The district bought one from a private entity for some Kč 50 million. The swimming area has been closed since 2012. Local residents protested against turning the location into residential housing and want the swimming area reopened.

Prague now has six lakes for swimming and nine outdoor pools in addition to indoor pools and aquaparks.
