New Year's Eve Derby Pražských „S“ to take place Dec. 31

Players from Sparta Prague and Slavia Prague will meet at Eden

The 31st annual New Year's Eve Derby (Silvestrovské derby) will take place Dec. 31, and be broadcast by Czech Television on its sports channel. The football match will see SK Slavia Praha face off against AC Sparta Praha on artificial turf at Prague's Eden Stadium. The match will begin at 11 am with a Veterans Derby for players over 45 years old. The main event, the International Derby, starts at noon with international players over 35 years of age. At halftime at 12:30 there is a shoot-off at Champagne bottles and a handover of humanitarian gifts. The match will end at 1 pm, and be followed by a New Year's toast.

“The Derby is a great tradition that no one underestimates, and on the pitch there's always a great battle,” Vaclav Čičatka of event organizer Niosport Agency said.

Sparta icon Jiří Novotný said, “The rivalry is big and acute, but always in the spirit of fair play. The aim primarily should be to meet again and have fun.”

Fans attending the match live are urged to come early due to security precautions due to both the current international climate and the heated rivalry between the clubs' supporters. The two Prague clubs have a long rivalry. The New Year's Derby goes back to 1986, although the clubs have been facing each other in other matches since 1896. Slavia won last year's International Derby 5:3 and has dominated, winning 20 times, while Sparta has won six times and four matches resulted in a draw.

In the Veterans Derby, Slavia has won five times, Sparta has won twice and there was no winner six times.

The Slavia team for the International Derby will see participation for the first time by David Jarolim, Tomáš Pešír, Karel Piták and Michal Drahorád. Sparta will see its ranks joined by Jiří Jarošík, Václav Koloušek and Tomáš Hübschman.
