Prague to invest in new bike routes

An app is also intended to make using bike paths easier and safer

Prague will invest Kč 25 million in cycling infrastructure this year and has prepared projects for another Kč 65 million, Deputy Mayor Petr Dolínek (ČSSD) said. The projects will include new bike paths and cycle stands. Last year, Prague spent over Kč 52 million on cycling.

This year should see new bike routes from Kozinova Street to the Botice stream in Prague's Hostivař district and a trail from Běchovice to Horní Počernice. Next there should be a bike path from Cholupice to Dolní Břežany. Some 400 new bike stands will be installed, particularly near public transportation stops. The city also wants to invest in a pan-European bike trail that will go through Prague.

The city also launched a smartphone app (Android) that will help cyclists with maps and navigation. The app will extend about 15 kilometers into Central Bohemia. Cyclists can find ways of combining their route with rail and other public transportation. People can also choose between the fastest and the safest routes. The app will also point out where bike stands are located.

The app can also be used to identify problem areas, and the city hopes experienced cyclists will use it to communicate with the city about areas that need repairs or changes. The city gets information about larger “bike highways” but lacks info on smaller routes. The app is available at Google Play.

Prague is also investing in promotional campaign called Čistou stopou, or clean trails. The main focus of the campaign is not just environmental, but also for people using different modes of transportation to show mutual respect.
