J&T Banka Prague Open less than a month away

Big stars are expected for the women's tennis tournament in Stromovka

Female tennis stars will be coming to Prague for the J&T Banka Prague Open, which will take place May 1–6 at TK Sparta Praha in Stromovka in Prague 7.

Spectators can see top Czech players including Karolína Plíšková, Barbora Strýcová and the defending champion Lucie Šafářová, as well as international star Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark, who was recently ranked number one.

Petra Kvitová, who was injured during a home invasion and robbery at the end of 2016, will not be playing this year.

Tournament director Petra Černošková said that the lineup this year looked like the strongest so far. This will be the eighth year for the tournament. “I would be glad if a Czech player wins for the third consecutive year,” she added. Lucie Šafářová won in 2016 and Karolína Plíšková in 2015.

Karolína Plíšková is currently ranked number three in the world for singles. “It has so far been the best start of a year in my life. I have won a lot of matches, had a lot of success and I beat some good players. Three months on concrete allowed me some high quality [play] and now we'll see how I will be on clay,” Plíšková said.

Talks to get Caroline Wozniacki to attend began after the Australian Open in January, and the contract was signed last week.

The organizing committee also announced two wild cards. The first one went to Markéta Vondroušová, a promising local young player. The other one was given to Kristína Kučová of Slovakia. “If there will be a third wild card, we will inform you just before the start of the tournament,” Černošková said.

The official promotional posters were unveiled along with information about the tickets. The admission to the venue will be free of charge excluding Saturday, the day of the singles final. There will be two kinds of tickets for this match. First category ticket for the seats located closer to the court will cost Kč 200 and cheaper ones for Kč 100 will be for the seats in the upper part of the stands.

Tickets will be available from 10 am on April 10 at Ticketportal.cz.
