Mužík back on Kotlářka's roster

The Czech baseball player had been playing in the US on a college team

Catcher and infielder Martin Mužík is back in the Czech Republic, and he hopes to get Prague baseball team Kotlářka back on track to get into this year's playoffs. Kotlářka lost last year to Draci Brno after reaching the finals.

Mužík had been in the US to play at Wake Tech Community College in North Carolina, and before that had been in the championships in Mexico for up to 23-year-olds on the National Team, and in European selection in the Winter league in Asia.

He says it was his dream to play ball in the United States. He had a .406 average and scored 10 runs and 47 RBIs for the Wake Tech Eagles during the season.

In an interview published on the Kotlářka website, he said it was a great experience to play college baseball in the US and he was glad he attended. He earned university credits there that can be transferred, and studied four hours a day.

Now he is focused on the Czech league. He says that this winning weekend's match with Technika Brno is crucial for the team. Currently, Kotlářka is in seventh place in the Czech Extraliga (CZ), with 12 wins and 15 losses, putting them 10.5 games from the top. The league is led by Arrows Ostrava, with 22 wins and four losses. Kotlářka has been on a losing streak for three weeks in a row.

The game against Technika will determine whether Kotlářka makes it into the top six in the league.

Mužík already played for Kotlářka on the day of his arrival from the States, but was not in top form, he admitted. Kotlářka lost a double header with Arrows Ostrava, which hurt the team's ranking.

He watched the Kotlářka's progress from abroad and has faith the situation can be turned around. “I believe we can make it to the playoffs. I have been really watching Honza Novák on the pitching mound. One coach [in the US] even asked me who he was,” Mužík said.

Mužík will be returning to the US in the fall to continue his studies and play ball, and he is set to attend the 2017 Summer Universiade in Taiwan.

One thing he missed when he was in North Carolina was Czech food, and before he came home he asked his mother to prepare some for him.

Mužík was born in 1996 and has been a member of the Czech National Team since he was 15. He has been studying to be a paramedic and took courses in medicine while he was in North Carolina.

Kotlářka, which topped the league in 2015. It has its origins in the early 1980s as a student softball team.
