Refufest celebrates Prague’s diversity

The two-day festival will be in the center of the city

Refufest takes place June 8–9 in Prague at Kampus Hybernska. It is the 13th edition of the cultural, artistic and social festival.

Refufest, which as a motto of “Let’s celebrate diversity,” has grown from a small, local gathering into a two-day festival celebrating the Czech capital’s wide range of people and its international, cosmopolitan character.

Refufest is an occasion for people of different ages and backgrounds to meet, connect and learn from each other.

“This year we are putting considerable effort into accessibility. Not only will the festival stay free of charge but it will take place in the heart of the city in the centrally located Kampus Hybernska,” the organizers said in a press release.

The festival is run by volunteers who are mainly migrants and refugees residing in Prague. Some people work on the festival all year long.

The festival itself starts June 8 in the afternoon. The first day will be dedicated to presenting NGOs working to empower refugees and migrants as well as launching the festival with a debate, the opening of the exhibitions and concerts. Bands such as the funk, hip-hop, Balkan and klezmer act Tygroo and the Greek-Czech band Jannis Moras & Banda are scheduled.

There is also a screening of the recent documentary film (In)visible Cities: Istanbul, which looks at the African diaspora. Film director Angelo Gianpaolo Bucci will attend.

June 9 will begin with a program of theater and workshops devoted to children. The afternoon will have concerts and more documentaries.

Concerts come from Slovak singer Katarzia as well as South African blues artist Gerald Clark & 2127Sounds, among other world acts.

Stands will offer traditional dishes of immigrant communities and also present their culture. Dance, music and arts-and-crafts workshops will be held. Artists will lead guided tours through the exhibitions. There will also be open-mic and interactive installations.

The festival is organized by community center InBaze, Youth Included and volunteers
