Celebrate Europe Day at Střelecký ostrov

The day will culminate in a free concert by Eddie Stoilow

Prague will celebrate Europe Day 2017 on Thursday, May 4, on Střelecký ostrov. Events will occur that week across Europe as well, and many EU institutions in Brussels, Luxembourg and Strasbourg will have open houses and programs.

At Střelecký ostrov, events will begin at 1 pm and continue to 9:50 pm. The highlight for most people will be a free concert wit headliner Eddie Stoilow, which is a group not a person. They released the album Jupiter in 2016, and have been active since 2003. They follows after opening acts Militsa Gladnishka, Mihail Yossifov & Friends; Moonlight Breakfast; and Debbi.

The day begins at 1 pm with children's games and contests, which last to 6 pm. At the same time, EU members and organizations will make presentations and have stands. There will be theater presentations and a round table on travel and a panel discussion on EU issues.

Separately, on May 9 a concert is being organized by Radio Prague at the Rudolfinum. Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, which included the Ode to Joy, is on the program. The Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra will be conducted by Jan Kučera. Ode to Joy is the anthem of the EU. Unlike the events on May 4, tickets are required for this concert.

Europe Day is also the EU's flag day. It commemorates May 9, 1950, which is when French foreign minister Robert Schuman proposed to place French and German production of coal and steel under one common supranational authority. This meant that the two countries would have to abandon centuries of animosity. The Schuman Declaration led to the Treaty of Paris in 1951, and eventually to the European Economic Community and the European Union.

The Council of Europe, which is separate from the EU, celebrates May 5, which is the anniversary of when it was established in 1949. Both days are seen as the start of a long period of peace within much of Europe.

The Czech Republic joined the European Union on May 1, 2004, along with nine other mostly Central and Eastern European countries.
