Prague wages well above national average

But costs of flats and some other items are also much higher

The average gross monthly wage in Prague for the first quarter of 2017 was Kč 34,530 up by 4.1 percent from the same time last year. This is significantly higher than the national average of Kč 26,896, but growth was slower. The national gross average wage rose by 5.3 percent compared to the first quarter of 2016, according to preliminary figures from the Czech Statistical Office (ČSÚ).

For full-time equivalent (FTE) employees, Prague wages were slightly higher at Kč 36,194 in Q1 2017, compared to an average of Kč 27,889 for FTE across the Czech Republic.

Prague had some 842,500 people working in the first quarter with 804,800 FTE employees, including commuters. This is up 3.7 percent (3.5 for FTE) from the same time last year. Nationwide, there were 4.093 million people working, an increase of 1.9 percent year-on-year, with 3.947 million FTE employees, up 1.7 percent.

Prague also shows the second lowest level of unemployment, at 3.2 percent, among the Czech regions. Plzeň had 3.1 percent in March.

The higher wages allow Praguers to buy more food and consumer goods, which in some cases are comparable in price or cheaper than in other areas in the country.

Some goods and services are more expensive in Prague than in the rest of the country. For example, cleaning a men's suit costs more than Kč 300 in Prague, while in the Vysočina region it is less than Kč 200, according to daily Pražský deník.

Big differences can also be found in costs for parking and for some forms of recreation.

The biggest difference though is in real estate prices. An average apartment in Prague now will cost more than Kč 6 million, some six times than a flat in Ústí nad Labem, which is the cheapest area, according to statistics compiled by Pražský deník.
