Unemployment drops in Prague again

The capital has 3.2 percent unemployment, but is only in second place

Unemployment in Prague in March fell month-on-month by one-tenth of a percentage point to 3.2 percent, according to data from the Czech Labor Office. The nationwide rate also dropped.

There were some 28,670 people without work in Prague, which is 750 fewer than the month before. Job vacancies in the same time frame increased by 2,052 to 26,431.

Slightly more women were without work than men. For women the unemployment rate was 3.3 percent, while for men it was 3.1 percent. In Prague there were 26,725 available job seekers ready to work immediately. For each job vacancy there are 1.1 applicants, while the national average is 2.4 applicants per job.

Prague, though, does not have the lowest unemployment in the country, it is in second place. Currently the region with the lowest unemployment is Plzeň at 3.1 percent. The Hradec Králové region is in third place with 3.5 percent. The region with the highest unemployment is the Ústí nad Labem region, at 7.4 percent unemployment.

The unemployment rate for the whole country in March fell to 4.8 percent from the previous month's 5.1 percent. Labor offices nationwide registered 356,112 people between 15 and 64 years old looking for jobs, the lowest number since March 2008. Job vacancies rose to 150,917. Some 99,950 job seekers were receiving unemployment benefits.

Compared to the rest of the EU, the Czech Republic has low unemployment. The most recent figures from Eurostat are from February. Seasonally unadjusted unemployment in the Czech Republic at 3.5 percent compared to 8.4 percent for the EU28. Seasonally adjusted figures put the Czech Republic at 3.4 percent and the EU28 at 8.0 percent. In this method, the Czech Republic was the lowest in the EU, although Iceland, which is not an EU member but is in the European Economic Area (EEA), was at 2.9 percent. Greece had the highest unemployment, at 23.1 percent.
