War veterans to be remembered

Memorial events will take place at Náměstí Míru and Vítkov

Prague 2 will remember veterans from 20th and 21st century conflicts on Nov. 10 at Náměstí Míru for the third time. The memorial celebration, which runs from 10 am to 6 pm, comes a day ahead of Veterans Day, which is celebrated internationally on Nov. 11, the anniversary of the end of World War I.

In the morning, the memorial celebration will be given over to schoolchildren, some of whom will participate in performances. The main program will start at 2 pm and will be opened by Prague 2 Mayor Jana Černochová together with representatives of the Ministry of Defense and the Czech Armed Forces. General Josef Bečvář, the chief of the general staff of the Czech military, will take part in the celebration.

Military equipment will be shown to the public by soldiers, and a sextet of musicians will perform. The POKOS project, which stands for Preparing Citizens for the Defense of the State, will also be presented.

Stalls will have products with military themes. The program will be complemented by exhibitions and screenings of military documentaries. There will also be poppies, which are the symbol of World War I battlefields.

From 4 pm, people can light candles for soldiers who have fallen in conflicts since World War I. Finally, a prayer for the fallen will be led by Major Jiří Ignác Laňka, the deacon of the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and Charles the Great.

On Nov. 11 there will be another memorial celebration at National Monument at Vítkov in Prague 3 at 11 am. This one is more formal and will include a wreath laying. Medals and honors will also be awarded. Minister of Defense Martin Stropnický will participate, along with other government representatives and diplomats.

Part of the ceremony will be the introduction of the book The Other Life (Ten druhý život), which contains photographs and stories of military missions and activities and other information.
