New Year’s Eve program at Old Town Square

Seven hours of entertainment are planned, with a DJ and live music alternating

Visitors who want to celebrate New Year's Eve at Old Town Square can expect a seven-hour show with performances of domestic and world hits from the 1950s to the present, market organizer Taiko announced in a press release.

While some Christmas markets have already closed, the ones at Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square are open until Jan. 6. Most others closed Dec. 24, while one at náměstí Republiky closes Dec. 30.

The New Year's Eve show at Old Town Square will start at 5 pm and will last until midnight.

The group So Fine opens the show with Czech and world hits from U2, REM, Beatles, Oasis, Sting, and others.

After that DJ Mikael van Dikeen and the group Party Leaders will alternate until midnight. Party Leaders plays hits from the 1950s to the present. DJ Mikael van Dikeen will do a five-part set ending at midnight called #BeGlamorous #BePrague.

“Those who come will hear the biggest hits of the dance scene over the last two years, and some of them will be exclusively in my personal remixes,” DJ Mikael said.

Police and other security and rescue services have announced that they will have a high presence and that emergency vehicles will be on hand. Streets near the square will be closed to traffic. The metro will run until 2 am.

There is another program for Jan. 1, which in addition to being New Year’s Day is Restoration Day of the Independent Czech State. From 3 pm to 4 pm, operatic soloists will sing arias from Czech composers Antonín Dvořák and Bedřich Smetana. This can serve as a warmup to the fireworks that will be launched from next to the metronome at Letná park at 6 pm. The metronome can be seen from Pařížská Street, which joins the square.

The final big event before the market closes is the procession of the Three Kings, which should arrive at Old Town Square on Jan. 5 at 4 pm. They come to deliver their gifts of frankincense, gold, and myrrh.

Cardinal Dominik Duka will appear with his annual message. The procession with camels will start at St Thomas Church in Malá Strana at 3 pm and cross Charles Bridge on its way to Old Town Square.

The celebration will end with a performance of the Christmas Mass by JJ Ryba.
