City Museum among most visited sites

The museum’s 14 sites saw an increase in business in 2017

The sites run by the City Museum of Prague (MMP) were collectively among the most visited in the city in 2017.

A total of 1,635,128 people visited the MMP’s 14 sites. The most popular site was the Petřín Lookout Tower, with 713 568 visitors, followed by the Mirror Maze, also in Petřín, with 391,058 people. The third-most visited location was the Old Town Bridge Tower with a total of 198,092 visitors.

The numbers were an improvement over 2016 when the MMP had 1,421,539 visitors.

The figures were up for most of the MPP sites. The Petřín Tower had 660,352 visitors in 2016. The Mirror Maze was also up slightly from 388,066.

The Old Town Bridge Tower saw a significant rise from 101,308 people in 2016, due perhaps to the Old Town Hall Tower being closed for renovations for much of 2017. The Old Town Hall Tower is typically the most visited tower but is likely to lose that position for 2017 due to the extended closure. The Old Town Bridge Tower seems to be in a position to take the top spot among towers instead.

In addition to the main building at Florence, the museum operates the Podskalí Custom House at Výtoň, Ctěnice Chateau, Petřín Tower, Petřín Mirror Maze, The Powder Tower, The Lesser Town (Malá Strana) Bridge Tower, The Old Town Bridge Tower, The Town Belfry by St. Nicholas´Church, The New Mill Water Tower, House of Golden Ring, Müller Villa, Rothmayer Villa and the Norbertov Study and Documentation Center.

In April 2017 the museum opened the New Mill (Novomlýnská) Water Tower to the public for the first time after a large-scale restoration that took a year to complete. Preparatory work has now started for the renovation of the Powder Tower.

In December, the museum opened the second part of Prague of Charles IV exhibition at the Golden Ring House, following up on the popular first part. Other temporary exhibitions currently underway include Czech film posters and the magic of holy images, both at the main building, and textiles and fashions of Prague at the House of Golden Ring.

Not all of the major attractions in Prague have reported figures for 2017 yet. Prague Zoo saw 1,445,126 in 2017, which was just short of its record from the previous year. The zoo was ranked fifth in the world by travel site Tripadvisor.

But they both have a long way to go to catch up to Prague Castle. While 2017 figures have not been released, in 2016 the Castle had 7.5 million visitors, of which 2.1 million had tickets. The Castle saw no significant closures in 2017, so figures should remain similar.
