Prague Zoo unleashing scorpion exhibition

There will be 40 scorpions of all sizes in show until the end of May

Prague Zoo will introduce a unique collection of scorpions. Visitors can come and see that they are unique creatures with extremely interesting abilities. A collection of 40 species of scorpions will be on display from March 10 to May 27 at the Gallery in the Gočar Houses (Gočárovy domy).

The launch of the exhibition will be 1 pm on March 10.

Representatives of the largest scorpion species of up to 20 centimeters long will be represented, as well as smaller ones such as the Lychas tricarinatus. Visitors can also look forward to the creepily named deathstalker scorpion or fearsome Androctonus australis (southern mankiller), which has the highest number of human deaths, according to statistics.

“With the introduction of 40 species of scorpions we are building on the exceptionally successful exhibition last year of goblin spiders,” Prague Zoo director Miroslav Bobek said in a press release.

“In the future, we want to devote more attention to invertebrates, both in permanent and temporary exhibitions. This year we are planning not only another show of several types of spiders. "

Throughout the exhibition, visitors will be able to take guided tours on Sundays, and, between 2 pm and 3 pm see their feeding. People can learn many interesting things about scorpions, such as the fact that most people do not need to be afraid of most types.

“Most species are shy and poison is used exclusively to catch prey. They try to escape or hide from danger, and the use of the poison spike is the last defense,” exhibit co-curator Vít Lukáš said.

If scorpions aren’t your thing, the zoo also has several newborn birds and animals including marabou storks, pelicans and an emu. Malay tiger cubs and a litter of cheetahs born last year also continue to draw crowds and the two baby elephants are growing up fast.

Prague Zoo had a good year in 2017. Attendance in 2017 was the second-highest ever. Some 1,445,126 visited. There was also the birth of 1,261 youngsters of 219 species of mammals, birds and reptiles.

In April, the zoo welcomed its 60 millionth visitor since it opened on Sept. 28, 1931.

Prague Zoo last year was named the fifth best zoo in the world by travel website TripAdvisor. The ranking is based on visitor reviews. The zoo took fourth place in 2015 and seventh place in 2014; no ranking was published in 2016.
