Experience Great Britain at Malostranské náměstí

A day-long event will have market stalls and entertainment to showcase the UK

You have a chance to get some of the experience of visiting Britain without the trouble of taking a trip. Malostranské náměstí in Malá Strana will be transformed into a British Market on Friday, March 23. The kid-friendly Zažijte Velkou Británii, meaning Experience Great Britain, runs from 10 am to 5:30 pm and admission is free.

People are invited to come and taste great British food and drink, see traditional British brands and modern technologies, enjoy British culture and entertainment and explore British style and design.

“All of this and more will be on offer at the ‘British Market’ to be held at Malostranské náměstí, where you can hear and feel the atmosphere of times gone past,” the description stated. The event is organized by the British Embassy Prague and British Chamber of Commerce Czech Republic.

The culinary part of the program is an “ode to haggis” and a cooking show at 2:30 pm. Haggis a traditional Scottish dish made of boiled meat and meat byproducts.

The schedule includes several performances, including Cimrman English Theatre, which will present some dry Czech humor in English translation. The group has toured with the famous Jára Cimrman plays both in the Czech Republic and internationally.

More cross-cultural cooperation can be seen with Scottish military bagpipers and drummers performing together with two Czech military ensembles at the grand finale at 5 pm. The Scottish bagpipers and the Czech military ensemble Ondráš will also perform at 1:40 pm and 3:40 pm.

Fans of dance can see a workshop on Scottish dance at 2 pm and a performance by Irish dance troupe Rinceoirí at 4 pm.

Britain has a new ambassador in Prague, following after the highly popular Jan Thompson OBE, who has moved on to new assignments. His Excellency Nick Archer MVO will make a speech at 1:30 pm. Czech Defense Minister of Defense Karla Šlechtová will also speak.

The morning part of the program will be taken up by presentations from three local schools: Prague British School, English College in Prague and Park Lane International School.

This is the second Zažijte Velkou Británii event organized in Prague. Britain has been increasing its efforts to reach out culturally and economically to other countries in Europe since the start of talks on Brexit. Even though Britain is making efforts to leave the European Union, the country wishes to keep close ties with European nations on a one-on-one basis.
