12th Historical Airshow at Mladá Boleslav

The anniversaries of the founding of Czechoslovakia and World War I are themes

Mladá Boleslav airport will host the 12th edition of the Historical Airshow on June 16, 2018. The main theme this year will be the end of World War I and the establishment of an independent Czechoslovakia, both of which happened in 1918.

Historical aviation techniques of this time will be joined by vintage cars and vehicles, period costumes and combat scenes.

Planes will come from a wide variety of eras. From World War I, a highlight will be a Caudron G3 replica from 1913. The single-engine French biplane was widely used in World War I as a reconnaissance aircraft and trainer not only by France but also by Poland, Finland, the US and other countries. They were made in England and Italy as well as France, as the Caudron brothers did not charge a licensing fee for the design out of support for the war effort.

Coming from a bit later, the P-38 Lightning was a piston-engined fighter aircraft developed for the United States Army Air Corps and introduced in 1941. Some 10,000 were built by 1945. The plane has a distinctive look due to its twin booms and central cockpit, making it look like two planes fused together. The P-38, often used for night missions, was unusually quiet for a fighter due to its design.

Another plane from the same era is the F4U Corsair, an American fighter aircraft used primarily in World War II and the Korean War. From the first prototype delivery to the U.S. Navy in 1940, to final delivery in 1953 to the French, 12,571 F4U Corsairs were manufactured in 16 separate models, making it the longest production run of any piston-engined fighter in US history. They were used up until 1979.

The organizers will also include modern aircraft of the Czech Army, acrobatic performances and skydiving.

This is just a sample of what will be flown. There are many surprises waiting for visitors during the day as well.

Those interested will have the possibility of flights around the area.

The gates open at 9 am for people to see the planes and historical vehicles, and take part in flights. The main airshow will be from 1 pm to 5 pm, after that people will again have the opportunity for flights.

Children under 6 years of age and seniors over 70 can come free. Ticket prices for people between 6 and 70 are slightly less in presale than at the gate.

The first Historical Airshow at Mladá Boleslav was held in 2002. It now tends to be held every other year.
