Hradozámecká noc opens castles at night

The annual event has programs at landmarks across the country

Hradozámecká noc, or castle and chateau night, takes place the night of Aug. 25–26 at cultural monuments across the Czech Republic.

Landmark sites will be open in the evening and have special programs of music and performances.

Several places in Prague and Central Bohemia are participating in the annual event organized by the National Heritage Institute (NPÚ). Many of the programs require Czech language skills, and tickets are required in many cases.

The main site this year is zámek Kynžvart in the Cheb district, which will have a large program including tours for both children and adults in the day plus a cooking show and gala opening in the evening, with many special guests.

Five places in Prague are participating: Chvalský zámek, Invalidovna, zámek Slovanka, Valdštejnský palác (Wallenstein Palace) and garden, and the gardens under Prague Castle.

Chvalský zámek, in the northeast edge of the city in Horní Počernice, will have a spooky fairy tale for children and a humorous tour guided by a castle chamberlain. More serious tours for adults with or without guides will also take place. Tickets are required for each event.

Invalidovna’s program is a little early, with the last tour leaving at 6 pm. The courtyard will be freely accessible. The tours will show a chapel and two wings of the building, which is under renovation. Some films clips will also be shown. Invalidovna, for example, was featured as the asylum in Amadeus. Tickets are required for guided tours.

Zámek Slovanka, one of the more obscure of Prague’s landmarks, is an 18th-century building under the Barrandov cliffs. It will be lit with candles and have performers fencing in period costumes and folk-rock bands. Kids can go horseback riding, and sausages and beer will be available. Admission fee.

Wallenstein Palace and garden will have a jazz concert at 6 pm and guided tours of the garden and open access to the historical parts of the palace, which is home to the Senate. Free admission.

The gardens under Prague Castle will have night tours to 10 pm. There will be historical fencing shows and classical music to create a romantic atmosphere. Tickets required.

Some 20 locations across Central Bohemia will have programs including the castles at Český Šternberk, Karlštejn, Křivoklát, Točník and Žebrák, as well as the chateaus at Mělník, Mnichovo Hradiště and Nelahozeves, and the cloister at Sázava.
