Prague Zoo celebrates 87 years

The zoo has had more than 60 million visitors since it opened in 1931

Prague Zoo celebrates the 87th anniversary of its opening today Friday, Sept. 28, which is a national holiday.

A special program is prepared throughout the zoo. Visitors can look forward to a show with the popular sea lion Meloun, the symbolic baptism of young cheetahs by the athlete Jakub Holuša and the introduction of a new Toulavý bus with the participation of its patron, footballer Karel Poborský. Anyone who brings a retired mobile phone or tablet will receive a gift.

There will also be the opening of an exhibition of zoo photos, and voting will start for the winner of the competition.

The Toulavý bus project is for environmental education of children in Cameroon. A school bus takes local children there on trips to nature reserves and stations. The previous bus has worn out and is being replaced by a new one. The bus is a gift from the city of Prague.

There is also a program at the Gorilla Pavilion, with games and feeding of the gorillas.

The zoo reports that so far attendance in 2018 is good. Attendance in 2017 was the second–highest ever. Some 1,445,126 visited. There was also the birth of 1,261 youngsters of 219 species of mammals, birds and reptiles. In April 2017, the zoo welcomed its 60 millionth visitor since it opened on Sept. 28, 1931.

Prague Zoo currently covers 58 hectares with 50 hectares used for exhibits. It has over 4,700 animals from 681 species, including 144 species listed as threatened. The zoo has 12 pavilions and over 150 exhibits. It has been particularly active in the preservation of the Przewalski's horses, which are slowly being returned to the wild.

Prague Zoo last year was named the fifth best zoo in the world by travel website TripAdvisor. The ranking is based on visitor reviews. The zoo took fourth place in 2015 and seventh place in 2014; no ranking was published in 2016.
