Fata Morgana greenhouse area to expand

The city plans to make the area more accessible and more interesting

The long-planned completion of the western part of the Botanical Garden should begin in the near future. The Fata Morgana greenhouse will gradually become a modern area with new cash registers, sanitary facilities and a snack bar with an outdoor terrace. There will also be growing facilities for plants for new exhibitions.

Completion of the construction work is scheduled for the beginning of 2020.
The renovations will improve access for visitors with special needs and families with children in strollers.

“The Botanical Garden will undergo a major transformation in the years to come. The aim is especially to increase visitor comfort, and to improve the missing social facilities and refreshments. … The growing area, which is necessary for expanding the collections and preparing plants for existing and new exhibitions, will also be expanded,”Bohumil Černý, director of the Botanical Garden in Prague, said in a press release.

The planned construction is a new entry point for visitors to the Botanical Gardens that leads to the Fata Morgana greenhouse. The purpose of the project is to make it easier to overcome the 10 meter height difference between the main entrance and the space in front of the greenhouse.

“The area will be separated from Trojská street by landscaping. An entrance exhibition consisting of terraces with retaining walls, outdoor staircases and a water element is proposed. These will also facilitate access to the Fata Morgana greenhouse, even for visitors with special needs. In the western part of the construction site, the central cultivation areas of the botanical garden are designed at three height levels,” Václav Jůzko, head of the building department of the Botanical Garden, said.

Prague Deputy Mayor Petr Hlubuček (STAN), responsible for the environment, said one of his priorities is to make the most efficient use of free time for families with children, and the new construction will help to accomplish that goal.

The access roads to the greenhouse will be changed for visitors. The main entrance will be moved from Trojská Street to Jiřího Jandy Street and the visitors will be guided by signs.
