Prague Zoo open for the holidays

People can again bring food gifts for the animals plus soccer balls

Prague Zoo has a large program over Christmas holidays with public feedings and special events. On Dec. 24, visitors can bring edible gifts for animals and used soccer balls for the tigers. The tigers can be a bit rough with them and go through them pretty quickly.

Children under the age of 15 can enter the zoo on Christmas Eve day for just Kč 1.

On Dec. 24, the pavilions and restaurants in the Prague Zoo will be open until 2 pm and the area will remain open until 4 pm. This day visitors can bring to the main entrance vegetables, fruits, dry baked goods or biscuits. Orangutans like sheets or bed linen, while tiger are fans of football (soccer) balls. Until 1:30 pm there will be narrated feedings and at 1 pm there is also a performance in the sea turtle area ending with a special Christmas gift for sea lions.

In the past, visitors have brought tons of food for the animals, and this has helped the zoo to extend its budget.

On December 25 and 26, the Christmas program will take place in the Bororo Reservation with domestic animals, and there will be small gifts under the Christmas tree for children.

On Dec. 28–30, there will be more guided feedings and ones using donated food, and the delivery of unused Christmas trees. Several animals such as camels, elephants, and gorillas like the branches and needles.

The zoo reports that attendance in 2018 has been good, though final figures are not yet available. Attendance in 2017 was the second–highest ever. Some 1,445,126 visited. In April 2017, the zoo welcomed its 60 millionth visitor since it opened on Sept. 28, 1931.

Prague Zoo currently covers 58 hectares with 50 hectares used for exhibits. It has over 4,700 animals from 681 species, including 144 species listed as threatened. The zoo has 12 pavilions and over 150 exhibits. It has been particularly active in the preservation of the Przewalski's horses, which are slowly being returned to the wild.

Prague Zoo in 2017 was named the fifth best zoo in the world by travel website TripAdvisor. The ranking is based on visitor reviews. The zoo took fourth place in 2015 and seventh place in 2014; no ranking was published in 2016.
