Botanical Garden celebrates 50 years

There will be special events during the year, and new construction

Prague’s Botanical Garden is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, and there will be changes to the facilities at Troja in Prague 7. The year will also be filled with special events.

This year, a new entrance gate and a cash desk will be built, and the garden facilities will be greatly expanded. There will be a new restaurant with a summer terrace and a new greenhouse of the same size as the existing Fata Morgana complex. The area will become a terraced system with flower beds and water features. Bridges, paths and other elements will be modified.

A footbridge will be built at the Botanical Garden over a public road that separates the western part of the garden from the rest of the complex.

The development plan also includes a new website and information system.

These changes are part of a larger redevelopment of the gardens. Within five years, a new main entrance should be constructed in the northern part. The goal is to attract visitors from Kobylisy and Bohnice by making it easier for them to enter.

At the ceremony to mark the 50th anniversary, the projects for this year were presented. “In the near future, there will be real change. Visitors will enter a garden with new, modern facilities, restaurants, and lecture and exhibition spaces. Everything will, of course, be barrier-free,” Botanical Garden director Bohumil Černý said.

Construction work will start this year and last for two years. The investment will total Kč 90 million.

Changes will take place in other parts of the garden. This year, a new exhibition for climbing plants, ferns and orchids will be created in the northern part of the garden area. It will also include a smaller greenhouse for delicate plant species.

There will be important changes to the water supply. The garden has been using large amounts of drinking water from the municipal water supply for irrigating plants. In the future, it will get its supply from the nearby Vltava river. Last year, water costs amounted to approximately Kč 3.2 million.

The anniversary year will be marked with special events including evening tours of the Fata Morgana on Fridays until March 21. More events can be found on the Botanical Garden website at

Last year the Botanical Gardens had 371,000 visitors. The management expects to increase the number of visitors to 600,000 people per year once the new greenhouses and entrances are completed.

The Fata Morgana greenhouse opened in 2004, with 1,750 square meters of exhibition space.
