Details set for New Year's Day fireworks

Show will have a theme of Dynamic Prague and include laser effects

The New Year's Day fireworks will be set off in Prague's Letná park on Jan. 1 at 6 pm. The show will take 10 minutes and 47 seconds cost the city Kč 999,999 without tax, which was about the same as last year. The show will be called Dynamic Prague, and have some 4,795 pyrotechnic rounds, 236 effects including lasers and 1,200 electronic commands.

“The New Year's fireworks display is a tradition for me, and I believe that this year's theme will accurately reflect what Prague will really be next year,” said Mayor Adriana Krnáčová (ANO).

The fireworks were moved back to Letná due to complaints that the show last year from Vítkov Hill was not visible from very many places.

The fireworks will be launched from near the metronome. Good vantage points to see the show from Letná include Dvořákova nábřeží, Pařížská Street and the three bridges in that area: Mánesův most, Čechův most and Štefánikův most. They can also be seen from Letná, though part of the park will be closed off for safety reasons.

New Year's Day is Czech Independence Day, as Czechoslovakia split on Jan. 1, 1993. Unlike many cities, Prague does not have a big official fireworks show at midnight on Dec. 31. The 6 pm show is so that families can attend the event.

Previously, the New Year's fireworks in Prague were fired from Střelecký ostrov or pontoons in the Vltava. They were eventually moved to Letná because the fireworks were injuring waterfowl. Last year it was moved to Vítkov Hill because residents near Letná complained about the noise disturbing pets, and also that the park was closed in the day for preparations, inconveniencing people who wanted to exercise or walk their dogs.

Fireworks shows are a common event in Prague, but that may soon change as the City Council is expected to approve a plan banning fireworks shows with the exception of a few holidays such as New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.
