Easter options for family entertainment
Options range from steam trains to egg painting lessons
The four-day Easter weekend is underway, and the markets are open. There is also other entertainment across the city.
The biggest Easter market is at Old Town Square, and the stage has a large program of entertainment events. For kids, there are also animals to pet including a donkey and goats. The market at Můstek is smaller but also has some animals to pet.
The markets aside from food and other items feature elaborately decorated Easter eggs, and woven willow whips, which are used on Easter Monday in an old tradition of whipping away the infertile spirit of the cold winter months.
A highlight for Easter this year, at least for those lucky enough to have gotten tickets, is a concert by Irish singer and musician Glen Hansard. He will be playing an intimate show at the relatively tiny Žižkov Atrium on Easter Monday. Hansard won an Oscar for Best Original Song for “Falling Slowly.”
Train buffs can ride on steam trains to Křivoklát, where there is a castle with an Easter fair in the courtyard. The trains will run Saturday and Sunday, and people with round trip tickets can get a discount on castle tours. Train tickets can be bought in advance at Masarykovo nádraží and the Praha-Braník station.
The train will have cars from the 1940s and '50s, the locomotive 475.179 “Šlechtična” and a buffet car with Ferdinand beer. The steam train will depart from the station Praha-Smíchov on Saturday and Sunday at 9:40 and arrive at Křivoklát at 11:14. For those who do not want to see the castle, the train will continue on to Lužná u Rakovníka where there is a railway museum.
For those who don't want to travel so far, Prague Zoo also has a program. Throughout the Easter weekend people can learn to make Easter eggs, and on Friday and Sunday learn how to weave the traditional Easter whip, called a pomlázka. The program also includes animal feedings and folklore music.
Museum Karla Zemana (Special Effects Museum) has a special program where kids can paint dinosaur eggs, among other things.
Planetarium Praha in Stromovka also has a special program, and will have shows in its dome. The projection system was modernized in 2009 and 2014.
