Open House Praha lets you peek inside

Some very modern and a few older buildings will be open to the public

The third edition of Open House Praha will take place May 13–14, and allow people to see inside more than 40 buildings and spaces not usually open to the public.

Participating buildings include historical places as well as the examples of architecture. New buildings on the list this year include the headquarters of, the seat of Czech Radio Regina and Region in Karlín, Villa Winternitz and the roof of House of Fashion (Dům módy) on Wenceslas Square.

Villa Winternitz in Prague 5, was built by architect Adolf Loos for the lawyer Josef Winternitz, and is similar to Villa Müller. From this April, Villa Winternitz will be open for the public, but during Open House Praha you will be able to see to spaces that are usually closed.

The headquarters of Czech Radio Regina and Region is the National House (Národní dům) in Karlín. It was restored after the 2002 floods and has some art deco designs. Among other things it has a memorial plaque commemorating the founding convention of the Czechoslovak Communist Party in 1921. has its headquarters at Palác Křižík II, and people will be able to see some offices, a terrace with a climbing wall and the roof.

House of Fashion was built in 1956 by architect Josef Hrubý, who managed to go a bit beyond the restrictions of the times. The fifth floor terrace will be open, with a good view of Wenceslas Square.

Several sites related to transportation will also be open. People can see inside parts of Nákladové nádraží Žižkov, the freight station that has been closed for 14 years. A private lounge from the First Republic in Masarykovo nádraží will be open again. Prague's main station Hlavní nádraží will open up its governmental lounge, which has hosted heads of state like Fidel Castro. Nádraží Praha-Bubny will have events during the weekend organized by Shoah Memorial Initiative, and the departure hall will be open.

Historical buildings on the list include the House of the Two Golden Bear and Invalidovna, and there are also some very stylish homes such as Kramář Villa, Vila Lanna and Malá vila.

The bulk of the sites, though, are examples of modern architecture including the recent Danube House and Enterprise Office Center. The latter is home to cybersecurity firm Avast.

Reconstructed spaces such as the former mill at Parní mlýny are also on the list. It is home to HBO.

Only a few sites this year require advance registration, which opens on the event's website on May 5. These are access to th technologies of the Main Point Karlín building, the seat of the Kooperativa insurance company, the headquarters of VIG ČR. In some other places, though, tour sizes are limited and there can be lines. Also note that several places do not allow photography.

Maps and other information will be available at the event's info center at Hybernská 4 in Prague 1. There is also a free app for Android and iOS available.
