City to install smart benches

New benches will provide WiFi and charge phones

As part of the Smart City project, the leadership of Prague has approved the installation of four to 10 benches WiFi and solar powered smart trash bins for Kč 4 million without tax. The benches were approved by Adriana Krnáčová (ANO) and will start to be installed by end of this year.

Benches capable of tracking weather and environmental conditions, providing WiFI and charging phones will be in the city center as well as Žižkov, Vinohrady, Holešovice and Prague 8. The smart waste containers would notify trash collectors when they are full and need to be emptied. Krnáčová said that the city needs to replace old benches and also meet the needs of more people. The bench and containers will still function at night.

The Smart City program aims at improving the quality of life of the city's inhabitants. According to report by Transparency International, the programs will cost the city some Kč 300 million per year.

The opposition parties, however, stated that the money could be spent on more urgent projects.

These will not be the first smart benches in the country. A pilot program installed a similar solar bench in Václav Havel Park in Litoměřice, north Bohemia, in May of this year. Eighty-five percent of the cost was paid by the town from a subsidy provided within a program of Czech-Swiss cooperation.
