Šlechtova restaurace to reopen in 2019

The long neglected ruin in Prague's Stromovka is coming back to life

The ruins of a former hunting lodge turned restaurant in Stromovka park should finally be restored and open to the public in 2019, after decades of wait

Šlechtova restaurace has been in increasingly poor condition since World War II and was damaged in particular by two fires and the 2002 floods.

There has been much talk of fixing it over the years, but little action until recently. Aside from the main building, the surroundings will also be restored.

The repairs will cover the historic core of the building, the back of the main building, the original cellars, the retaining wall, the gazebo and reinforcement of the area.

The firm Pracom is doing the renovations for a total cost of Kč 100 million..Renovations finally began in June 2017, and some of the results so far have now been shown to the public.

“Several generations have waited for the restoration of this remarkable historical monument, and finally it is a reality. I firmly believe that next year the restaurant will be reopened and will celebrate,” City Councilor Jan Wolf (KDU-ČSL), responsible for culture, said on the City Hall website.

Prague Mayor Adriana Krnáčová (ANO) said that previous administrations lacked the willpower to see the repairs all the way through.

“Since the flood in 2002 no one has been found who would take the necessary steps to save Šlechtova. I am therefore very pleased that our city management has taken the restoration of the Šlechtova restaurace for its own and you can see the first results already,” Krnáčová said.

Work should be finished in the summer of 2019.

Šlechtova restaurace began as a royal summer hunting lodge when Stromovka was still a game reserve for the royal family.

It was built between 1689 and 1692, paid for by Count Kryštof František Vratislav z Mitrovic, as a gift for Emperor Leopold I.

When the park became a military grounds in the first half of the 18th century, the lodge was damaged and later it was used as a warehouse for grain and hay.

In the middle of the 19th century, Stromovka was opened to the public as a park.

A renovation in the middle of the 19th century gave the hunting lodge the form we know today. In 1883 Václav Šlechta opened the famous restaurant there that gives it its current name. His family operated it until the beginning of World War II.

After the war, the restaurant was still partially in operation, but the building was dilapidated and eventually closed.
