City Hall to discuss Náplavka renovation

The disused rooms under the wall could be transformed

Náplavka could see some improvements by next summer. An architectural study will be discussed by City Hall in February. The plan calls for more galleries, cafes and toilets in the wall under Rašínovo nábřeží.

Some improvements should also start this year on the stretch between Výtoň and the Dancing House, with new benches and smart waste containers that notify sanitation workers when they are full, according to Prague Mayor Adriana Krnáčová (ANO).

Náplavka, which years ago was a place most people avoided, has become a social meeting point for locals and tourists, especially in nice weather.

The architectural plan looks to make use of disused service spaces in the wall of the waterfront under Rašínovo nábřeží. These could be renovated for various uses including exhibition spaces and cafes. One of the most crucial points is adding more toilets as these are fundamentally lacking on the waterfront. These would be installed in the first phase of the plan. Smart trash cans and new lighting would also be tested in the first phase.

The renovation of Náplavka is part of an overall plan to revitalize the city's waterfront. The right bank of the Vltava is home to a popular farmers market and has many boats permanently docked there serving as bars, restaurants and entertainment venues.

The strip is also part of a bike path that eventually leads out of the city. In recent years, there have been increasing conflicts between cyclists and pedestrians in the area. People have also complained that there are too many boats blocking the view of the city and limiting access to the river itself. These issues will also be addressed by City Hall.

The popular farmers markets at Náplavka will restart Feb. 4 and run every Saturday from 8 am to 2 pm. Several special events are planned in the schedule such as food festivals, a microbrew beer festival, a rose wine festival, an Easter celebration and a strawberry festival.

In the long run, both sides of the waterfront should be renovated by the city from above Prague Zoo down to Zbraslav.
