Mezipatra Queer Film Festival coming to Prague

The 18th edition of Mezipatra presents Czech and foreign LGBTQ movies

Recent and classic films involving LGBTQ issues will be shown in Prague cinemas from Nov. 2 to 9.

Mezipatra will traditionally have different sections. The international feature film competition will present nine films showing the struggles of protagonists to understand not only others but especially themselves. Such movies as the South African film The Wound and or the American film Beach Rats will show the difficulties of LGBT in traditional cultures.

The international short film competition includes best short 2016 and 2017 films from Europe, Latin America, Canada, and Asia. The movies will touch upon such topics as forms of identity expression, value of family, following beliefs and various forms of relationships.

The festival will also present a selection of documentaries from all over the world. The desire to escape poor living conditions and to live a truthful life unites the movies.

Classic films will be shown in the retrospective section. Pedro Almodóvar's All About My Mother with Penélope Cruz shows how new beginnings help to deal with the past. The 1999 movie won an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.

Pawel Pawlikowski's famous film My Summer of Love will also be shown in the retrospective section. 2004 British film presents a summer romance of two girls.

Stephen Frears' My Beautiful Laundrette, released in 1985, tells the story of romantic relationship between Pakistani immigrant and London slacker during the Thatcher era.

The groundbreaking 1989 East German queer film Coming Out will also be shown. The film won a Teddy and Silver Bear award.

Apart from that, after eight years, Mezipatra will present its non-competition section of short films Queer as FAMU II by students of the Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague.

The official opening of the festival is the biographical drama Tom of Finland, which will be screened at Lucerna on Nov 2. The Scandinavian movie reflects the life and work of one of the most significant representatives of gay culture in the 20th century.

Following the screening of the movie, the Opening Party: Leather Your Leather with popular DJs Urxins and Rosier&Chlorophyll will take place at Lucerna Café at 10:30 pm.

The festival has an accompanying program which includes parties and lectures.

The audience will have an opportunity to visit the discussion about women in music, or discussion of gender issues in contemporary Czech cinema. The festival will also have a brunch and discussion called The Revolution Will Be Genderqueer.

Mezipatra also includes a lecture Struggle for Words. The assistant professor at European University at St. Petersburg will give a lecture on anti-modernity queerness discourse.

The main party of the festival will be on Nov. 4, with three Chillout Zone parties taking place in Patra café during the days of the festival.

The festival will end with closing party on Nov. 8 at 10:30 pm in Lucerna Café after the screening of All About My Mother.

Mezipatra is organized by non-profit organizations Mezpatra and STUD Brno. The festival introduces LGBTQ films apprised by a professional jury every year.

The aim of the festival is to broaden horizons and to provide the outlook into the variety of sexual and gender identities.

The festival is visited by about 12,000 people every year, and Mezipatra's goal is to offer a space for meetings and self-expression.
