Hurricane in Czech Republic left 145,000 homes without electricity

Due to an overnight thunderstorm and hurricane, around 145,000 households in the Czech Republic were left without electricity on the morning of June 30. The most common cause of accidents is falling trees and branches on power lines.

EG.D company recorded damages on high-voltage lines on the morning of June 30. In the south of the Czech Republic, about 37,000 families were left without electricity, mainly in České Budejovice, Český Krumlov and Jindřichův Hradec regions. Other 48,000 families in the Vysočina and South Moravian regions are now cut off from electricity.

ČEZ Distribuce recorded 186 high-voltage line breakdowns and hundreds of low-voltage line breakdowns. “Currently, we are eliminating the majority of accidents in Pardubice (28 injuries), Hradec Králové (26) and Plzeň regions (18),” ČEZ Distribuce reported.

Trees fell during a hurricane in the Vysočina region, firefighters made about 290 visits. About 20 cars were damaged by trees in Jihlava. Fallen trees stopped traffic on the D1 highway between the 119th and 129th kilometres at night.

In the Central Bohemian region, firefighters made 283 visits, most often they had to clean up fallen trees. Thunderstorms and strong winds caused problems on the railways. Trains do not run this morning, for example, on the Písek – Zdice line.

In the Olomouc region, fallen trees interrupted traffic on the main railway corridor and other lines. Wind and falling trees also damaged several vehicles, firefighters had to pump water from the basements of houses at some places.

    The police negotiated in the centre of the city of České Budějovice with a man who took a saleswoman in a tobacco shop hostage. At about 4:00 pm, the police managed to free the woman. The central square of the city of Přemysla Otakara II is now partially closed, the traffic stopped.

In general, cardiovascular diseases account for 30% of all deaths in the republic.
