Film preview: On Body and Soul

The lead actress of the award-winning Hungarian film will be at the premiere

The winner of the 67th Berlin International Film Festival will be at the Lucerna cinema on Sept. 21 at 6:30 pm for a special screening.

The Hungarian film On Body and Soul (Testről és lélekről / O těle a duši) will be presented by actress Alexandra Borbély, one of the two stars of the film. The premiere screening will have both English and Czech subtitles.

The film is being distributed by Be2Can, which stands for Berlin, Venice (Benátky in Czech) and Cannes, and is a special event ahead of the fourth Be2Can film festival, which will run Oct. 4–10 in Prague and Oct. 12–18 in the Plzeň, Olomouc, Ostrava and Zlín.

In On Body and Soul, two people who work at the same place share the same dream every night. They only discover this when a psychologist talks to all the employees. The dream involves deer in a forest.

The odd romance by director Ildikó Enyedi is filled with irony and black humor.

Ildikó Enyedi's first film, My Twentieth Century (1989), won the Camera d’Or prize for first feature at Cannes. Critics say she is back in form.

Industry journal Variety gave the film a good review. “A determinedly eccentric but intermittently startling misfit romance … marks a singular return to feature filmmaking for Hungarian writer-director Ildikó Enyedi after an 18-year gap,” Variety's Guy Lodge said.

IndieWire also praised it. “Writer-director Ildikó Enyedi mostly gets away with the outrageous scenario, injecting it with a touching, understated romanticism,” IndieWire's Eric Kohn, adding that the material could easily have gone astray in the wrong hands.

On Body and Soul will have additional screenings at art cinemas in Prague, but not all shows will have English subtitles.
